PUBLIC ADVISORY
Customers of the 66 Express Outside the Beltway:
On April 12, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued a public service announcement warning of a text-based scam targeting toll road users in multiple states.
The 66 Express Outside the Beltway will never send drivers any unsolicited SMS text messages, and we will never ask for credit card information via text message or over the phone.
The scam, known as “smishing,” uses fake SMS text messages to deliberately mislead toll road users into believing they owe money to the toll road operator. The text message may contain official-sounding language such as:
(State Toll Service Name): We’ve noticed an outstanding toll amount of $12.51 on your record. To avoid a late fee of $50.00, visit https://myturnpiketollservices.com to settle your balance.
Smishing scams like these are becoming more rampant. If you receive a text message you suspect is a smishing scam, the FBI advises that you:
- File a complaint with the IC3 at www.ic3.gov, including:
-
- the phone number from which the text message originated.
- the website given within the text message.
- Check your account
- using the official 66 Express website, www.Ride66Express.com.
- using the 66 Express Customer Service phone number, 1-833-643-2867.
- Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
- Delete any smishing texts received.
- If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts.
Thank you for your awareness of this growing concern and for vigilantly protecting your personal information.
